The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY LEVIN. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12. THE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
Tuk desirableness «t : establi«liing at W'uraroa the Agricultural College for the North Island is one that the fitizeiiK of Jjcvin and district would do well to keep pernnanonUy in the memory of Parliament. Levin Chamber ol' Commerce—«i public body that concerns itsi'lf witli wider uiatti'i'.s than I'ftstricbcd coninierco— aifirmed last night the desirableness itl' using the (.wce-llent experimental farm at Weraraa for purposes of the college. The Chamber's resolution reasonably stresses tho important fact that in tho present financial tightness of -New Zealand unnecessary heavy expenditures must be avoided. This view lias been put forward previously by tho Hon. Mr Massey, speaking in his capacity as Minister for Agriculture. Therefore he must be struck by tho soundness of the Levin Chamber's contention that an expenditure of from £50,000 to £80.000 fti purchasing and oquipping m farm at Marton or elsowhere would be wasteful extrnvaganco when tho Government Experimental Farm at Weraroa is so excellently adapted for tho purposes of an Agricultural College. The merits of the case undoubtedly are-with Levin, and wo fed sure that the Minister for Agriculture and tho Government as a whole must become nioro and more impressed by this fact whenever they give it reconsideration.
