As wo go to press the news comes that John "Whellan has hcen committed for trial, at the sitting of the •Supremo Court to ho held next week, in Palmerston North. The inquest into the <lo:ith of the late. Constablo Doyle has been adjourned to 18th February. The 'body has been taken to Canterbury For interment. The ease against John "Whellan, of Levin, for having fired a revolver at John Wilkinson, has occupied the S.M. Court to-day. for a considerable time, and is still unfinished. A full report of the proceedings will appear in Friday's Chroncile. A telegram from Hawera states | that again there is beautiful weather for the Egniont races. The first race (Waimnte Handicap) resulted in a win for Heatherbrae, Golcbz© 2,'Doarest3. Other starters were: Peroneal, G rattan, Lady Volga, Lucerne and Tnenru. The time was Tmin. 15 2-5 scos.
