Cycling and Motoring Notes.
+ : From the Dunlop Rubber Tyre Co., Christchurch, for week ending January 18th, 1013. * # * # » * * # « * A remarkable long distance series I of motor car records have been rocontly established on Bfooklands track (England) by Victor Hemerv, who is probably the finest speed dri- , ver in the world to-day. The records attempted were the one to six hours, standing to tho credit of the I ".Sunbeam" car. Hemcry drove the "Lorraine Dietrich" that took part in ia*t year's French Grand I'rix: the nominal power of tho oar w:\s 59.(J h.p. Starting away at a great speed, Memory covered f >7 miles, 1037 yards, in the first hour, and 100 miles in Glinin 27sec. Continuing on at a wonderful pace, tho following -records were achieved Hours Miles Yards. 1 D 7 1037. 2 lgfl 1747 3 284 " 817 ■I 3ft 1344 5 422 1574 6 518 312 Tn addition to the above the following now records were also established :— Miles hrs inins sees 100 in 1 1 27.(5 150 in 1 ,T1 52.0 200 in 2 o »5(5.7 400 in 4 31 23.8 500 in 5 48 38.8 On one occasion Hoinory was delayed for 23J minutes on account ol ono of the bolts of the connection between tho radiator and water circulating pipe being lost, owing tn the incessant vibration. This and other minor delays that occurred only make the performance of Hemery all tho more amazing. Owing [to tho delay with the radiator, the French crack lost the 300 miles record which was easily at his mercy. All told, Hemery established eleven new world'** records. Tt is interesting to note that the cubic capacity of the engine of the big powerTill car Hemery drove was five times greater than that of tho little "Sunbeam" which previously held most of the records. The respective engine capacities were 15,09." cubic inches and 2f)Bf> inches. There is every probability of the proposed Sydney-Melbourne motor car reliability trial taking place early this year. The New South "Wales Automobile Club is in favour ot it. whilst the Victorian Club will also more than likely support it. whilst the Victorian Club is said to favour a four days' run over the direct route; but many Victorian motorists would like to see the test extended over five days, so.that the Eolith Coast route around, via. Tlega, Oooma. and Tuiniit could be included. This course would appeal to man\, on account of its pietiirpsrjueiiess. and furthermore, it would, owing to its hilly nature, provide n more strenuous test. Tt is probable that a teams' competition—\W • ont.h Wales r. -Victoria—will also be incorporated in tlx- test, and if it is. such an event would add considerably to the interest of tlie contest,
