A newspaper report on the Wellington egg market supplied by some Wellington produce merchants states that "while there is a good demand for eggs, the supplies are arriving freely, and wiles are being effected at 10-Jd to lid I"''' dozen.'' Several Levin poultrymon who were met together on AYedne.sday night dissented .strongly from the suinmnrv above quoted, and said it was absolutely misleading, and was fixed unfairly. The railway freight retuni:for Levin station, they said, would show beyond dispute that the quantities of eggs sent forward from tin's district this month represented considerably less than half the total eggs out in the flush of the laving .season, and yet Wellington prices at that: period ran from 101 to Is per dozen. As Levin and district supplies the prepondei ating volume of Wellington's eggs. toda.v\s quoted price of eggs. they argue, is quite an unjustifiable one. and they say unequivocally that ; i has been fixed as the result of a conspiracy between certain Wellington merchants who are bent on beating out of business the Wellington ngen l of several co-operative bands of
poultry men in the Wairarapa, I lull and Horowhcnua districts. The further assertion was made by the poultrymon. last Wednesday, that quite an arbitrary standard of values was being; fixed by the merchants: in short, that eggs alleged to be sold by public 'auction were not submitted to competition, but in reality were sent out by the auctioneers to their shopkeeper customers and charged for at whatever price the auctioneers were pleased to put upon them.
AMERICAN NOVELS
Amisuk'AN novels have a characteristic touch of human pathos. ail inwardness of .survey, that atones fo'' their .shortcomings in other directions; lor tlieir occasional uneveness of quality and their common lack of plot. Tlieir very weaknesses at times are their sources of .strength, inasmuch as they appeal to «i large class of readers to whom the nicoticof composition are nothing, and .strict adherence to sot rules and syntax needless. The American novel, in short, is instinct with emo tional stress and endued with moving scones of everyday joy iand sorrow—and hence it comcfc that they sell by millions whore the more cleverly constructed and enduring works of the masters of literature lie i'i their hundreds on the upper shelves. These remarks of general application have been drawn from us by ;i synopsis of the story of "The Old Nest'' —a recent novel by .Rupert Hughes —which has reachedus from Mr J W. Thompson, bookseller-, of Levin. Simply and solely for its human interest the synopsis is reprinted i" another column of to-day's Chronicle.
