The third annual Melbourne-Syd-ney motor cycle reliability contest, organised by the motor clubs of New South Wales and Victoria, was hell during New Year week, ar.d proved a great success. All told 27 rides took part in the trial, 21 from Now South Wales and six from Vu't-ria and of this number lifteen (on.'pktod the 572 miles journey without los of points, a very satisfactory te>ult considering the rough and heavy raciire of the overland roiu-e. Tin successful contestants who CMnpleted the journey without lus-, of poiu.s wore Messrs J. A. Fair (3J h.p. J ''Speedwell"); W. Reynolds (31,■ b p. "Triumph)": R. Glanfield (3£ b.p "Bradburrv"); X. Saunders, 3 J h.p. "Bradbury"): A. Brown, 3J- h.p. "X.S.U."); M. Fraser (!j h.p. ".Speedwell"); L. Finch (3] h.p. "T.-'umph"); McTntvre (3.}" h.p "Triumph"); A. Levi 31 h.p. "L.M.C."); L. Palmer (5 h.p. "Roma"); P. "Murray (5 h.p. "Yiota"): W. J. Diamond, N.S.W. (3< h.p. "Ariel"); E. Taylor (31 h.p. "Rover"); ,J. Sutherland (31 h.p. "R and X."); C. P. Monday, Victoria (3J h.p. "'Pudge/')'
As is usual in a long run of this description a number of riders were put out of the contost owing to (■alls and bad luck. Up to Gormanton, tlio cud of the second day's run, very few of the 57 starters had lost points, but the had stretch <' road between German foil and Gundagai caused most of the trouble?, and many of the contestants scored their first loss of points on this section of the route. The proportion of riders to finish with the maximum number of points i, s considerably better than in the two previous trials. The outstanding feature 'f the run was the plucky effort of the Victorian rider, Eric Tyler, who had the bad hick iiipproachin.tr Albury to fall and fracture the frame of his Dunlop shod "['over'' in two places. With the mid of wire and wooden supports he braced the frame up, an d maintained the time schedule for over 370 miles of mountainous country into Sydney. His performance was a remarkable one. and no one wa.s more proud of his achievement than his fellow competitors. The weather right through "•■as favourable, and the roads better condition than lastvoar.
