Chamber of Commerce Proposals. DISCUSSED AND ELABORATED. Levin Chamber of Commerce met last night, iMr E. S. Lancaster (prosident) in the chair. There also were present Messrs F. o. Roe, M. Fosclla, T. Broome, B. 11. Gardener, I). Matheson, A. 15. Haswell, D. Smart, G, 'P. Brown, H. Newport, and A. Dempsey (acting secretary). Consideration was given to a circular letter seeking to extend the combination known as Association of NewZealand Chambers of Commerce. The proposal did not meet with the meeting's favour, and the opinion was expressed that the chief movers- - Auckland and Wellington Chambers --had never shown a disposition to help on the several matters brought forward by the Levin Chamber of Commerce. Eventually thecirculir wan received.

SAND DRIFTS. Mr B. IL Gardener spoke of tho great importance to Levin and district of having adequate steps taken to arrest the encroachments of the coastal sands on the arable lands of this district. He regretted the dilatoriness of the present Government in this matter. It was seven 1 months since a deputation from tlii-. town interviewed a Minister of the Crown on this matter, but so far no information had been received; no answer from the Government. Last neck he noticed a "local" on the subject in the Horowhcnua Chronicle. Perhaps it was only a- coincidence that on Saturday last an of ficial of the Public Works Department came up and made an inspection of the sand drifts towards Wii'okino coast. Mr Gardener took <"t is an act of discourtesy that after the Chamber of Commerce had mov ed iu this matter, and also in the subject of acquiring certain Levin estates for closer settlement, no official answer should have been given. He moved "That this chamber respectfully requests the Prime Minister to give some information regarding their intention in connection with the sand drifts, and land for settlement, in this district, being aware that officials have visited the district to inspect same, this chamber is of the opinion that they are entitled to a report on the questions." The motion was seconded by Mr Lancaster, who touched briefly upon the trouble and time entailed in the chamber's preliminary work in these two movements, and the thorough manner in which the Government representatives wore shown over the drifts and also over tho Totara and other suitable, estates. The motion was carried without dissent. IMPROVING BEACH ROAD. In a discussion concerning Beach ruad (initiate! by Mr 1). .Smart), it was mentioned that if a couple ol bridges were put fu at a spot beyond the place known as "the willow trees" a clear, easily-passable roa 1 could be got at small expense. Mr Uoe sugestcd that :v deputation representing the-Levin Ijorough Conncily and the Chamber of Commerce should wait on the Horowhenua County Council and ask it what had been done in the matter. It was resolved that Messrs Gardener, Lau•aster and Uoe be the deputation, ind that it wait on the council at 'ts meeting in February.

Mr Hoc spoke of the business Jitlvantages thai wonkl accrue to Levin if Gladstone road were extended five, or six foot to the Mangahao river, ff this were done a track from Kketiihnna would i)c reached, and a splendid tract of land would bo ■>penr<l up to this district, and from it a fine lot of store stock (both sheep and cattle.) could he drawn annually. Other profitable trade relations could be established also.

Mr Hnswell mentioned that Eketaliuna had agitated, some years ago, for the establishment of a track" from Eketahuna across the ranges to Shannon or Levin, but nothing had come of the movement. Mews Smart and Gardener agreed that by going along Gladstone road the precipitous Miangahao hill would be skirted. In further discussion on the .subjiUje'mentioned that a settler onvjbTie Eketahuna .side with whom #>i he hajcl been conversing put down the probable numbersthat would be brought at sixty thousand to seventy thousand"' head. It,;;.was decided to defer further* discussion for one month, to the end that the secretary might write the Eketahuna. Chamber of Commerce on the matter, and to give Messrs Uoc and Ha swell an opportunity to write privately for further details.

HOROWILENUA LAKIS. The flooded condition of the shores of Horowhenua Lake—through insufficiency of the outlet to the lake —\yaS" discussed. Many years ago and earlier it was considered necessary by the old chiefs to have thy outlet cleared out every two years, but during the last twenty-live years there had been no clearances made. Tho matter was a very serious one (the meeting considered) and' it was suggested that the Lake .Domain Hoard be approached on the subject, Mr Lancaster incidentally mentioned the subject of fishing in the lake, and suggested that endeavours be made to have the lake thrown open for fishing. Mr Roe said the lako was getting in an unhealthy state, through stagnancy. Mr Newport said the proof that the lake was too high was to be seen in the fact that

titoki trees on the margin of the lake now were standing in water. Titoki trees never grew in water nat nrally. Mr Deinp.sov remarked that there was no pleasure now in going to the lake; an expression of opinion that 'Mr Mathes.m agreed in. Tt was essential to wade out under present conditions. The smell ocasioned by the stagnant water was commented upon by Mr I'oe, who said that there would be risk of an outbreak of typhoid unless some remedial measures wore taken. Finally it was moved by Mr Lancaster and seconded by Mr Hoe, ".I bat a deputation from the chandler wait upon the Lake Domain Hoard and request if possible that pressure should be brought upon the Natives regarding the removal of some ci the water from the lake, tins Chamber being of opinion that the large quantity of water accumulating interfering with the pleasure of visitors to Levin, and others who wish to inspect ilie snot."
