A civil case to recover moneys duo by reason of breach of trust was heard in the S.M. Court, Levin, to-day (Thursday). Plaintiff was tho Horowhenua County Conned and the the defendant 'was Charles TiJntwhistle, now of the Rangitikei district, but formerly of Shannon. Herbert Edward Lodge, County clerk, gave evidenco that Entwhistb was employed by the County Council as dog tax collector at Shannon He had admitted to witness that the money claimed had been collected, .and had undertaken to pay it over, but had neglected to do so. The magistrate made an order for payment forthwith, in default fourteen days' imprisonment in Wellington gaol. Tt was understood that probably the County Council won 13 give defendant until tho end of March, defendant having written to the Court explaining that he would bo in a position by then to discharge his liability.

Mr Poynton, S.M., the newly- ap pointed magistrate on this circuit sat at the Levin Courthouse thi" morning for the first time. Mi Park, on behalf of the bar, welcomed Mr Poynton to Levin, and expressed the hope of himself and his fellows that Mr Poynton would be restored to health by his change. Mr B. R.. Gardener, J.P., also extended felicitations to his Worship on behalf of tho honorary bench, and also ns 'MayoV of Levin. He said that ; f the justices could do anything to lighten Mr'Poynton's work at any timo they would he very pleased to do so. In acknowledging the felicitations, Mr Poynton said he felt better already in consequence of the bracing elimate here and the nice receptions he had had. In any case, the complaint from which he suffered would not interfere with him in his magisterial duties; if ft did he would not have imposed himself on a district like this. He thanked the Levin bar and his worship for their kindly expressions towards him.
