The High Court recently declared invalid an award obtained by the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia on the ground that no dispute could extend beyond the limits of one State. An acute position has now arisen as tlio old State award of New South Wales has now expired. Tho result is that captains and officers of both Now South Wales' and South Australia are without legal a word covering tho conditions of employment. The coastal shipowners of New South Wales recently intimated that they will ho willing to meet the Guild in conference. Tho Guild replied that they were prepared to do this provided tho wages and conditions wero discussed. The shipowners did not reply. The Guild believe that tliuy possess tho moral and active support of the seaside unions. CABLE SERVICE. The new Sydney-Auckland Pacific cable traffic will commence on December 31st.
