Johnson, the pugilist, has been acquitted on the charge of abduction brought against him in Chicago. A donation has been given by Mr ■J. Scott co the funds of tlie'Levin Fire Brigade, and the members desire to express publicly their thanks to him. Shearing operations are in full swing at Heatherlea, and Mr J. R. Macdonald expects to put over 20,0(10 sheep through the machines in the next few weeks. An excellent programme has been arranged for this evening's dance at the Levin Town Hall. There will be special music and a large attendance is expected . The I!ev. Father Venning, S.M., met with a motor cycle accident in I Wellington last evening, and later succumber to his injuries. He was M years of ago. With a view to supplementing the i nnus for the improvement of the Levin recreation ground, tho local hockey clubs yesterday engaged the King's Theatre for a cinematograph entertainment. A diversified programme of films was thrown on the ■screen by the management, and' tho entertainent was a gratifying success. From the. sale of tickets a goodly sum should accrue to the recreation ground improvement fund. An accident befel Mr Love joy, of Levin, in an unusual way Ijist Saturday evening he had been l'or a ride in Mr Anstice's motor car, and after getting back to the garage ho turned a wheel at the back of the ear. Unfortunately the power "back-fired." and as Mr Lovejoy had kept hold of the wheel he received a jar that broke a bone in his wrist and necessitated the placing of his arm in splints. The following players will represent Levin against Shannon, at Shannon, to-morrow: Hayward, Young, Moir, Mackenzie, Essex, Bevan, Harper, Sloan, Retter, Harding, Stuckey Pringle and Terry. Tho drag will leave Mr Hugh Hall's shop at 12.45. Any player unable to go is requested to notify the secretary. Father Venning, S.M., whose tragic death was reported from Wellington last night, was well known in Levin. He was the originator of tho local branch of St. Vincent de Paul's Society, and also formed tho local branch of the H.A.0.8.5. He was a most energetic man, and in his'day was a noted cricket and football enthusiast.
Mr T. R. Hall's thicks (Weraroa) still lend in the New Zealand Egg Tests, by four eggs from the Heretan nga Poultry Company's pen (1012 to 1008). Tn the hen test, Mr "W. A. Nixon's White "Leghorns load Ky f>4 eggs from Mr J. G. Green's "White Leghorns (1053 to 999). A Wenaroa pen (Mr H. Leger) fills seventh position.
