Friendly Socities' focal Gathering.

W'.ut wan regarded as the best mid most successful gatherings of the combined Friendly Soc-k-tics of Levin w«s held last night in the-Druids' Ha.ll, when the Mayor (Mr .13. It. Gardener) presented the challenge shield to the Foresters, who won it Tor 1912. Tho shield, which is a hamkomc one, with oak basis and solid silver emblems, has. to be won three times in succession or five times alternately before it becomes the actual possession of a competing Society. On the first occasion it was won by the Oddfellows, the Druids were successful a year later, while tlie third . year's competition saw the Foresters .in possession. The Druids' Hall wasin excellent condition for dfrncing,' Bro. Patton,. of the Foresters, having been busy making the necessary preparations during tho afternoon and evening. During an interval the Mayor presented the shield to the Foresters, and congratulated them on winning it, and' said, that the, competitions were an excellent and desirable way of passing tho winter evenings. The May:>r also said that he was glad to notice the fraternal spirit that existed among the various Friendly Societies in Levin," and dilated briefly on the advantages of' belonging to such institutions. Bro. Davidivon accepted the shield in a few happily selected sentences, and then presented to the Druids the b"ooby shield, which was accepted by Bro. J. Young. Bro-. thers McTaggart and Follns ■ made .efficient M.C.'s and. Mr Kearsley's music was.all to be desired. Extras were played by Miss Seacord, Mrs Fairs, and Mr. J. .Rose on accordion with piano' accompaniment by .Wood ing, who also contributed n song. A tribute is duo to Bro G. Davison, the hon. secretary of "the gathering, much- of tho success of which was due to liis efforts.
