The secretary of the Levin Lawn Tennis Club has received a general invitation to the members, from the Ohau Ladies Hockey Club, to their annual "social" and dance, to be held ton "Wednesday, August- 28th. ; To-morrow (Tuesday) evening, in the Borough Council Chambers, a meeting will be held of all persons favourable to the formation of a Beautifying Society for Levin. Auckland successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield against Wellington on Saturday, in a- Ilugby match played at Auckland. Wellington failed to score, and Auckland gained four tries, one of which was converted. Manawatu Rugby representatives had a highly successful day on Saturday. Their "A" team defeated Wairarapa. "A" by 15 to 3, their "B" team defeated Horowhenua'; "B" team by 16 to 7, and their school team defeated Wanganui by 0 to 3. In the House of Representatives this week the member for Ohinemuri (Mr Poland) ifi to ask the Minister of Defence, Whether it is true that where the Defence Regulations do not apply Territorials are liable to punishment under the English Army Act, and that, therefore, for the offence, say, of striking an officer or for disobedience they are liable to punishment up to death on the finding of a Court-martial, and not of a Judge and .jury? The members of the Manawatu County Council recently inspected the tram line from Samlon to Foxton, with a. view to studying what alterations and additions should be made for providing for the increasing requirements of the settlers. New sidings have been asked for in several places along the line. As showing the work which the system is called on to do, the Foxton Herald reports that on Friday afternoon last, on the journey back to Sandou, the train comprised lo trucks of merchandise, which were distributed at various points along the line. The scarcity of labour in Canada (says a, Late offieia,!' (report) is a matter that. is causing much anxiety to many farmers in the Province. Notwithstanding the large immigration, farm help is said to be harder to obtain than ever before. The quality of the labour offering is inferior to what most farmers have been used to, as many of the more experienced young men on Ontario farms havo answered the call of the West, while the "urban drift," as one correspondent terms it, has also drawn many farm helpers to the town and city shtops and factories. The consequence is that many farmers cannot procure adequato assistance, and some have to attempt their field and stable work alone. Domestic servants are harder than ever to procure.
In replying to a deputation which asked that the Wairarapa he made the site of the agricultural college to be established for the North Island, the Premier (Hon. W. Massey), said he had been very glad to notice that the proposal to establish an agricultural college in the North Island had met with general approval. In connection with the proposal, first of all lie had to got the consent of Parliament. He had no doubt tliat consent would be forthcoming. Then he would have to consult hie Ministers as to ways and means, and in the recess he-supposed the responsibility would fall upon him of selecting a. site for the college. Tn that connection the claims of Wairampa. would receive due consideration. He would not make any promise until he had visited the different suggested sites, and had i seen tlrem for himself. Mr TCuchan>an asked whether an offer of monetary Assistance would induce the Government to favourably consider the proposal.
