In Aid of the Church.
I CATHOLICS FOREGATHER IN SUCCESSFUL CONCERT AM) Catholics (and Friends of the Roman Catholic Church) crowded the Levin Town Hall last evening on the occasion of the annual concert and dance. The object of the function was to aid the funds of the Church, and an excellent programme was submitted to an enthusiastic audience. Til? arrangements were admirable throughout, and reflected great credit on Me:\sis .1. Ivearsley and F. J. Devine. who worked assiduously throughout, and who materially helped to make the function the success it AViis. The stage was ■ most tastefully decorated by Miss I Flera Mac;h.iiakl. ;>f Heatherlea, who I was ably assisted by Miss Flora Mnr- ■ d'Hiald (of lloiowheiiua) and Miss ■ Mcf.oivcv. The Mayoress (Mis GarI dener) kindly lent a large number of plants for decorative purposes, Mr Mfc O'Douobne lent chairs and settees. and Mr W. l'alir.or. of Oxford street, 1 "iit furniture. Much useful work was also dnin> by the Ladies of the Altar Society and the Society of Hibernians In the unavoidable abseuse. of Mr .lames MeLeave.v, who was ahs-i'iit tlircngli ini])ortaut busin. j/e-s matters. Mr H. l\. Gardener (the 'Mayor) acted as .stage iirinager. The programme was of a diversified nature, and was most successfully carried out. It was opened by the I little MisM* Ida Procter and Ivy J , ink in a pianoforte duet ll La Garde Moiitante" (Welv) and was pertornii ed with most creditable precision, the audicii'" , applauding loudly. Mrs K. D'Afii. always a favourite when , her voice is known. sang "Waiata l'oi" with great success, and wa> loudly encored. Master J. Cooper recit'd on the .Rhine." and although he hesitated over "i ivw lines, with a little pra--tice he should become a capable reciter. Mr Motter.shead's rendering of "In Friendship's Xaiue" was a line effort. Master McLeavcy wr.s as popular as ever. On appeari".'_C he \vn. loudly applauded, and in hi> inimitable style. 'They Call nte Simple Johnny." An eiicore ensued, us encores lor his songs later on ensued. Misses Wehipeihaiin, llawiri and Te llhvi ( - J) gave a part .song, and although they forgot a few lines, they showed confidence. Two brilliant violin solos were given by Mr Tiilseiika, of Wellington hi.s playing of •■ The Lust Hose of Suninter"' won him an enthusiastic recall. Mi>s Munilord, of Foxton. w:>.- a great favourite, and sang -- lf all the Stars were -Mine,' , encores being demanded. Mr Hiiglass was most effective in "Kind, Kind. (Jentle is Shu" : this given in a fine tenor voice was one of the features of the evening. Mrs flail received niptiiroiis ehcens for "Alone on the I'aft," and an encore was inevitable. The humorous element was splendidly supplied by Mr Vatcs. of Foxtoii, in several • song.s. Mr Jar- C'urran brought down the house with an Irish jig, E which would Ikivc done good to the Y hearts of C'onncniara. At the close \ of the concert His Worship the May. \ or (Mr M. U. Th • floor was in perfect condition, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr Rutherford acted as M.C.. and pleasing music was dispensed by Mr J. Kcar.sley's orchestra- Messrs Kearsley. Sloan and Tutsclika. Despite the fact that the weather was so inclement the function throughout was a most gratifying success, and to the joint secretaries—Messrs J. Kearsley and F. J. Devine—and the. ladies a word of special praise is due. The funds of the church should materially benefit ae a result of last evening's proceedings.
