The following circular letter lias reached us i'roin the Palmerston North office of the Department of Labour A new Carpenters' and Joiners' Award (Wellington country, districts) came into force on tile 22nd April, 1012, and all workers require to be paid accordingly as from that date. The following are the chief items of interest to both employers and workers:—■ Scope of the Award i 1? that part ol the industrial district lying south of the Rangitikei river and includes Pahnerston Xorth, Foxton, Kinibolton, Ashurst, Rongotoa, Levin. Ohau, Otaki, Pulls, Great ford, Apiii, Longburn. Maiiakau, "Wnikanae, Shannon. Tokomaru. Tinkitalmna, Foilding and Woodville. Hours.'—Fortv-nix hours per week to be worked between 7.-10 a.m. and noon. One hour shall be allowed for dinner except Saturdays, but oni pi overs may agree with worked to allow only halt-an-hour tor dinner from the Ist May to the 31st August so that work shall cease at -1.30 instead of 5 p.m.
"Wages.---Is l.\d per hour. On outside .jobs where-four or more workers are employed the foreman shall receive not less than Is a day additional wages. All wages must be paid weekly or fortnightly in cast, and within 15 minutes after the time lor leaving off work. "Worker* on country work can make mutual arrangements as to payment. Piece work i- prohibited. Overtime rates of pay are provided for holidays and Saturday afternoons. Tudor-rate workers can have their wages fixed by the Inspector of Awards. Four pence a day extra is allowed for every mile or part of a mile 'beyond two miles from the chief Post Offico of the town in which the employer's place of business is situated. Work more than six miles from such Post Offices shall ho considered country work and shall be paid for at ordinary rate plus Is Gd per day extra. Tf requested by the workmen the employer shall provide reasonable sleeping accommodation on country work. Apprentices employ, od on country w>rk slmP 'bo provided with board and lodging free of charge and travelling expense? to and from shall ho provided or paid for. Properly secured places for workers' tools shall be provided as also sanitary convenience, and grindstones shall be supplied where two or more workmen are employed.
Xumhcr of nppretences is limited to one to every three or fraction of the first three. Period of apprenticeship shall be five years. An employer taking an apprentice shall give notice thereof to the Inspector of Factories within one week after the expiration of the period of probation. Several methods are named below as to tlu- 1 hiding of apprentices. Three moi.vhs' probation is allowed.
