The Chronicle, PUBLISHED DAILY. LEVIN: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, '12. FARMERS CO-OPERATIVE CONCERNS.
The wrecks of 00-operative concerns are piled up on the shores of recent times by the thousands. In consequence, co-operative concerns are in bad repute. The money lost in them is reckoned by the hundreds of thousands sterling; yet the fact remains that here and there some brilliant exceptions are found. Most of tho failures arc led up to by unsought and unnecessary interference by persons who are not properly grounded in the special business that is undertaken. Having regard to the many failures, it is with satisfaction that we record the comparative success of one of the very latest co-operative ventures; wo speak of the co-operative bacon factory run by itlie Eltham and Mangatoki Dairy Companies. This concern has been in active existence for only twelve months, but it has bounded into the field of success. During its first year's operations it disbursed nearly £800 for pigs purchased from shareholders, and the overage price paid is estimated to be one-eighth of a penny higher than the prices paid to pig growers by the co-operative compounds.
