THE SECOND BALLOTS.
NORTH ISLAND FOR MASSEY SOUTH ISLAND FOR WARD Parties Nearly Even. Labour Has Balance of Power. The second ballots, held yesterday., resulted in the Government improving its position, though in the general result a confusion of parties | seems assured. The South Island voted solidly for the Government, but the North gave strong support to Opposition and Labour candidates. In our own electorate, the sitting member was defeated by his Labour-Socialist opponent, after an exceedingly close contest. Mr Field's defeat was on a purely party issue; in fact bis opponents are open in their expressions of regret at the personal aspect of Sis unsuccess. The new member—Mr J. Robertson—is a well-known man in the Labour world, and his success at the polls in a farming distirct midh as this has occasioned much surprise. OTAKI ELECTORATE.
