The Earning of Clerks.

INFORMATIVE FIGURES ON MELBOURNE -RATES.

Members of the Victorian Clerks Union have boon making inquiries regarding the rates of pay received by clerks in Melbourne. The investigations embraced the oases of 4503 clorks in commercial offices—banking, insurance and law clerks not coming within the sphere of operations.

Some interesting tables have been prepared by Mr Chambers, secretary bf th© Union, and; these sihwv that of 2505 admit males, 97 get 20s weekly, 74 22s fid, 134 255, 98 27k 6d, 393 30s, 86 32s Gd. 221355, .04 37s 6d, 308 40s, sfi 42s fid, 193 455, 22fi 50s, 82 55s 191 60s, 74 655, 54 70s, 38 755, 31 80s; whilst, 45 are in receipt of salaries from £200 to £300 yearly.

Analysis of these figures discloses that of adult male clerks in ,an<l around Melbourne 2263 receive average salaries of 38s 2|d weekly, 6s 4d daily, or £%! an hour.

2072 receivo average salaries of 36s 8d weekly, 6s Id daily, or 9d an Irour.
