On Wednesday, October 6th. the inaugural celebration of "Bird Day -, took place throughout New .South Wales, under the ■auspices of the Gould League of Bird Lovers, so named after John Gould, the great English onnonologist. Every year the birds of Australia are to have their "day"—the second Wednesday in October. Branches oF the League have been established in several other States, and it is hoped that tho whole of Australia will come in and that all Australians will form themselves into a committee of the whole to protect bird life. One ot the objects of the League is to ooint out to farmers and others the birds that are useful and those that arc noxious. The movement is primarily a State school one.

■Some amusement was caused in the Auckland Police Court on Tuesday morning (says tho Star) by an amply proportioned Femalo witness, who was waiting to give evidence in a case in which she was interested. Her tongue was garrulous, her voice of a chronically aggressive pitch , , and her whole personality a. direct challenge to the world at large. Despite the demands of the Court orderly, she insisted on making remarks ,which the pitch of her voice rendered most annoying. The Hub-Inspector suggested that she shfl'uld. he sent to the justices' room, where she could talk to the telephone, Imt she- objected. Then the •Magistrate ordered her removal, and she went—propelled by two constables, and protesting. A few seconds later her appearance through another entrance resulted in a second objection, and thereafter she hovered at the rear of the Court, having furtive peeps at the proceedings, but always retiring precipitately on sight of a moving blue uniform. Her personality was no longer aggressive.
