"I would like every resident of this town to take a walk aromid Horowhonua Lake, so that they may get- au idea hk>w vei-y little use the *ike is, from tha points of -view of beauty or use," was the remark of the Mayor at a meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce to-day. He went on to say that if the money for clearing the creek was forthcoming there would be very little difficulty in getting the natives to agree- to having the work carried out. The native rights over it were tribal rights, and the natives as a I whole wore beginning to see that something to alter the present conditions was necessary. Some few of the natives still were against the proposal, he knew, but the great majority of them were favourable. He' regretted the supineness of the people of this town, and he thought Tt regrettable that Mr 'Niven, who had worked so hard and long to popularise the lake as a boating iesort, had received such poor support in his endeavours. Mr Gardener intended, at to-night's meeting of the borough council, to move thiat some-subsidy be given to Mr Niven. Eventually the meeting resolved that Mr Parker ibe instructed to call the chamber's special committee together (Messrs Gardener. Prouse, Lancaster Vincent and Park), and endeavour to have the general conditions of the Take improved. Mr Parker mentioned that the matter of getting the lake thrown open to fishermen, and of getting it stocked with perch, w'as an aspect vof the case that should be kept in view. "
