Sunken Submarines.
EXPERIMENTS IX RATRTXG THI-TM FlUttl DEI'VP AVATRR.
Important experiments with the, object of devising a realiblo scheme by which submerged submarines may be raised were commenced at Portsmouth on Thursday. Two submarines of the old Holland iype wore taken out to Spillioad. and doekyar<l lighters lilted with special lifting apparatus also went out. to the vicinity of the Nab lightship, off the east coast of the Isle of Wight, where the experiments are to ha carried out.
To the submarines steel hawsers have boon fixed, round the hull, and it is hoped' to prove the possibility of lifting them from deep water so as to bring at least the conning towers of the submarines above t.Up surface and then tow the vessels to shallow water.
If the expoi imenls are successful, in tho future submarines steel bolts 'will bp built round the vessels, to which it will bo possible, in the event of a si;l)iuarin"'.s sinking, to attach lifting apparatus.
