Explosive Cigarettes,
Three Manchester tobacconists have been fined by the stipendiary magistrate for selling cigarettes containjng explosives.
'flie prosecutions were instituted under Section 3 of the Tobacco Act, 1842, which imposes a penalty Uip to £200 (on any dealer in tobacco who sells or lias in /his possession tobacco containing anything other than water.
Mr Frank Dart, who represented the Customs and Excise Department, stated that an Excise officer purchased two packets of cigarettes from William Griffin, :• of Stretford-road, Manchester, and each cigarette was found to contain a. couple of small explosive crackers.
"The offence might lead to a serious fraud," Mr Rart added, "as if a large trade were done in exporting these explosive cigarettes tthieire would be a heavy loss to the Revenue on the "drawback" of 4s Id per pound."
Griffin was fined 40s and: costSj and the other offenders—Jacob Rose and Leah. PlocMnsky—2os eoch and costs.
