Aβ showing what can be done "by thorough dairying and farming methods, Mr H. Purdie, of the Waitara road, had a return last yoar of over £12 per cow for a herd'of 75 cows. ,His brother, Mr J. Pnrdie, in the same district, had the splendid record of over £15 per cow from a herd of 30 cows. These records n-ro for; milk alone, and do not includereceipts'from pigs and calves. Messrs iPui-die have for several years gone in for heavy culling and systematic . testing, and the results ncihioged have paid them handsomely. Both herds are principally composed of Jersey and grade Jersey.
-• Certain instances have come under the notice of the officers of the Live Stock.Division,.of the Agricultural Department, in which mortality has occurred among cattle and pigs'wJicn feeding upon mangels which have not undergonerthc- process known as "pjtting." One rather serious instance in which "eight cows have died-on one property is just now undergpijig social investigation, and the Department has arranged for a guantity of the roots to be sent to Wellington foi chemical analysis by Mr Aeton. Any settler who experiences: similar trouble is requested to communicate the fact to the nearest officer of the Live Stock Divisioh, "who will , give 'the matter his special attention.
