Railway Sub=way at Manakau.

The Ofcaki Mail reports that at the last meeting of tiliie Otaki Road Board a letter was received from the clerk to the Horowhenua. County Council .asking if the Hoard had forwarded their promised share of £60 .towards the .Manakau subway. Mr W. H. Field M.P., also wrote, saying lie would be pleased if the Board could forward its .share of the cost while a letter was read from Air Lindsay, saying lis .'had received word that tine Railway Department 'could not-proceed with' the subway because the Board's cheque for their share of the work toad not been received. Tihie Chairman said he .wished to .-make an explanation. At one Board meeting it was decided to pay tlvo necessary money (£6O), and the lato clerk had been instructed to- write and ask'the Minister when the money was needed'. He (the clerk) had overlooked the matter, and as the next meeting was chiefly confusion, owing to the. illness of the clerk, it was agreed to let the matter stand over, and now the Board was not in funds. There had been an unusual number of calls, and these came before the rates had come in. Amplications for tfhe Government grants had not been made, owing to the late Mr fiager's illness, and confusion still reigned. This time last year the Board was warned to go steady. The position now was that the Board had no money to pay towards the subway, and therefore nothing conldi be done at this meeting, but might, possiblv, at the next. The Board would ha.ve to wait for rates and Government grants. The present overdraft was £54C 3s 7d!~-higher than had been the case for some years, and they could only go up to £666. If a resolution was carried to go -up to that amount, tihe Board could meet accounts, that is. if they left out the subway and one or two other accounts.*" iTt was decided to ask the Bank for an extension of an overdraft to £666 Wardens Best and D'Atih to arrange and sign for. -
