Tlio Taranaki circular road ].!>•;>, which representatives ;>f the big cycling firms state is destined to become the premier road race of Australasia, was run to-day under unfavourable weather conditions. The course was from New Plymouth to Opunake, thence to Eltham, and thence back to New Plymouth—a total distance of 104 miles. It is said to be the longest circular track in the world for a cycle road race, and the prize money tho largest yet offered in the Australian colonies. Of 87 entrants no fewer than 05 .started out on n wet road and a drizzling rain. The road, over a succession of hills, was for the most part heavy with the usual winter patches of new metal, yet surprisingly good times were recorded. Jas. Clarke, of Palmerston North, a youth, of 19 years, was first home, and made the fastest time. He started off the 32mins. mark, and covered the route in 6 hours 17mins. oi) 2-ssec. He secured £50 in cash and a ■*-<■*) challenge cup, racing bicycle, and other trophies, the whole being of a total value of nearly £150. Next in order came Greenless (Wanganui) 37mins.; Stoddart (Waitara) 50m ins.; Wad roan (Onehungia) 30 mins.; Christiansen (Wanganaii) 40 mins.; Henderson (Palmerston N.) 12mins.; Young (Winchester) 25min ; Wiley (Sew Plymouth:) oOmin.; Kofold "(Tariki) 30 min.; A .B. L. Smith (Christchurch) scratch. Tlioso filled the ten places. A complaint was made against Koford riding on the footpath. Great interest was taken in the rate throughout tho whole district.
