The Grand Winter Garden Fete in aid of the Alethodist Church will be opened 'by the Mayor ot l ( ox-ton at 2.30 p.m. on Friday next. A large gathering is expected. There will he visitor.s from Levin. .Foxton and Tokoinaru. For the evenings entertainment, there will lie a cantata under the direction of Airs Saunders. and on Saturday evening there will ho the "camp firo concert." In addition to this the Hoy.s' Training Farm .Band will pli.y selections. The liall is being decorated by tlm committee for the occasion _ a.nd the whole, affair is being carried out on a scale that would do credit to a larger town than Shannon. Happily acts of vandalism are rare in our town, but yesterday Constable Doyle discovered that the ornamental top piece of the Nhtion monument bad been broken_ of). A larfe stone was found within tbe enclosed railing, and upon coinparin.ir this stone witb marks it left no doubt tliat this niissle bad done tbe damage. Whether thrown carelessly or'by (Icsicn and by whom is sj ill unknown. The constable is bavins, tbe • monument repaired; fortunately it will bo an oasv matter to fix tho I broken piece_ in its place again.
