CORRESPONDENT.
[Our correspondents' opinions aro t-hoir own: the responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient ballasfc for the editor's shoulders.] THAT TOWN PLANNING SCHEME. To the Editor. Sir,— Our council, in its wisdom, has decided to purchase a right-ol'-way from King's Drive to Princes street—cost of land. £65, cost of construction £60, total CI 25—not n largo sum certainly, but theso small amounts aro gradually forming into a sum close on. £1000. There has been no provision made on the annual estimates of expenditure for any portion of tin's amount. The cost of construction of the library will exceed the vote by £75; the furnishing and books will cost another £150; and the public baths will swallow up £250. The. unforsoon expenditure on the intake tunnoil will cost another £250. Ye gods! Where ••ire the councillors who advocated, a "go-slow" policy? Why. they were falling over otib another in their endeavours to support a measure- that would benefit the private speculator! Tf the residents and owners on the Setter estate and King's Drive wish to improve, theij , properties. I maintain tliev should contribute the w,lmle cost. The araumenfs brought forward on Tuesday did not convince me that this town-planning scheme could not hare? been dealt wit.lv at the same price any time within the next two years.—Yours etc., CHAS.
