NOTES ON THE GAME.

(Contributed to Tho Ohroniclo "by "Forward.")

Uopata at full hack played a fi.no safe game. 11is kicking was good but he made a couple of mistakes by speculating which gave Manawatu a try. Rawiri played a sterling game. His goal kicking was a treat- to witness. Heta, on the other wing, though a bit nervous at the start improved towards tho finish. I'itihira was very sale and got in -some telling lino kicks. .Marton Winiata was 'hero, there, and everywhere. He kept -his men well together and. the try which Utiku scored was through his heady play. I tiku (Jacob) who has a good; future in store for him as a back, -laved finely. At times he was inclined to run a bit too far and crowd his wings on the line. Ho should try to J'un a hit straight or. Neville A\ iniata passed tho hall from the serum and loose very smartly, and ho stepped rushes in fine style. With a lew more games in that position he will surprise his keenest critics. '100 .much praise cannot bo given to the forwards who played liueiy to a man. Tt was something new to see lour or five men in every lorward rush during the play. W itli a- little more training they ought to make the finest forwards on the coast. Sciascia played the he*! forward game on the ground. Of the others one could not find a ma:i who played a bad same. They got a fair share of the ball in the serums, but their loose rushes were a treat to see and were instrumental in getting most of the tries scored. A feature that was conspicuous by its absence was whisker-grabbing. The collaring by both backs and forwards was of a most deadlv nature, no mistakes being made. and the man who had the ball came to earth without tho slightest- hesitation.

A MAX AAV ATI" OOMPLATXT.

Previous to the representative match Horowheuua v. Manawatu at Palmerston North on Saturday, a meeting of the two unions was held. Burge and AVhiblev represented Horowheuua, and Messrs AleAlanaway. Gibbons and Pawson woro present, for .Manawatu. Mi MoKenzie. secretary of the anialga-t-ed committeo was also present. Mr Gibbons asked why the la.-t report of the meeting of the Horowheuua. Rugby Union was allowed to be published. There was. ho said, no neeessiitv for -any member of that committee to say he "would put his foot down.'' The arrangements for the amalgamation ol the two unions for representative purposes were going on amicably, and there had been nothing to take exception to on tlve part- of Alauawatu. He complained that Mr A\ hi hie v. of I* ox toil, had asked by what authority Afanawatu had arranged the date for the match with Taranaki.

Mr Burge informed Air Gibbons that the -moo-tings of the Horowlienua Union were open to the Press for a full report, and the reports without exception were correct. It. was stated at the niootiirr that Mana-wat-u might <ret ;< a little abend" of Horowlmnua if Horowhonua members did not keen their eyes open, and he had said that so far as he was concerned he would watch matters generallv and the interests of his union in particular. So far ns the Taranaki match was concerned he hid told Air AVhiblev that the matdi was an annual fixture between Afannwatu and Taranaki. that it had been mutually arranced that (lie fixture should, this year, be li'-iyed by the amalgamated team. Tt was a matter of courtesv on the part of Manawatu to allow the mat:h to be plaved. Mr AVhiblev remarked that what he had said had been faithfully reported. Hie Manawatu representatives urged that nu error of .judgment had been committed, and itwas stated that the rennrt had gone "all over the country" that the two unions were at loggerheads. Regret was also expressed that one member of the union had stated that "ho would put his foot down."

•Mr Procter: ! said we would not ■play Hmvke's.Bav and Wanganui as an amalgamated union.

!\fr McKenzie said that there must be no feeling in tho matter. TTe was sure both unions would work harmoniously, in the future. (General applaits'O Hp thought the remarks alluded to were a little illadvised from the point of view that tliev were trying to settle details nicelv ard amicably. (Hear. hoar').

The meeting then proceeded with ordinary business. Mr Gibbons wa> elected ckairman of the committee. Mr *\V. R. Burge proposed tbat two selectors be appointed— otio from Horowhenua and one from Mmnwatu. Ho nominated Mr R. Smith and Manawatu nominated Mr Me"William. These two persons were then elected. The riuestion of trustees for the amalgamated union was discussed, and it was derided tliat there should be one from eacli Union—Mr Gibbons and Mr Procter. Mr Burge moved that a Horowlienua referee be selected for the Maori matrir to be played next Saturday. This was agreed to. and Mr Kin.gi Taliiwi was anointed.
