THE MOKAU LANDS.
AND THE LEADER. Ol* 1 THE
OPPOSITION
Mr Ma.ssey'.s recent .attacks on the Government in respect of theMokam lands have evoked the following reply from Mr C. A. Loughmui, solicitor, of Palmerstoii Xorth, which appeared in Friday's Manawatii Times:--•Sir, - 1 am not a politician and .Mr Massey's general ontponrings upon matters political, thougib at times mirth provoking in an involuntary, not to say elephantine -manner, concern me. not at all. In a. district, however, in which the- Opposition party is for the time being on top, the majority 'of olec-tuix with that childlike simplicity which characterises i-lio cult Opposition is apt to be impressed with the importance and accuracy of all utterances made by the Leader of the Opposition. This morning's paper contains references by Mr Ma.ssoy to Ilie perl'iiriiiuiices of THE MOK.AP COM.P.ANY. which recently :ici|ii'ired certain inlerests in tlio notorious M.-nkau block, which refero.nce-s apparently moved his Aucklaiul sympathisers well nigh to tears. Tn order to save local inhabitants from being similarly effected. I. hasten through tire medium of your columns to advise them that in all statements referring to tlio .Mokau Company Mr Ma«se"y has surpassed Munchausen, and for straight out bald inaccuracy has out-Masseycd even Massey. The following nrf A I- , I<;W COR RECTI ON S wihicli .1 com mend to the consideration of your readers:--1. No syndicate, purchased the, Mokau block from tho In fact, nobody purcihased the freehold of that block at all. A humble, individual, however, named Herman Lewis, a speculator, perhaps, but as such a sad and .sorry loser (as I know well), by the whole Mokau i Jones transaction, purchased with infinite pains and alter years of litigation tho right to sell tili>o block in small areas to the general public. This right he passed on, through a syndicate, to tho company siforesaid. 2. The (inn of lMnlay. Dalziel and Co. does iiol. and never did represent the purchasing syndicate, but on tihe contrary. I did, and always have done, and for the benefit of my health and otherwise I propose to continue to do so, Mr M.assey notwithstanding. 3. The syndicate, now merged into tho Mokau Coal and Estates Co., Ltd., which is so afflicted as to posses Mr Robert McXab for its chairman and me for its M>licitor, has not acquired one foot of land since it piircihiised Herman Lewis , interest in the Mokau block. Moreover it has its hand* i\\irncri..\i:i.Y i-tll at the present time with that venI nre, and doe< not- want in acquire any mo-re land.
