INTERFERENCE WITH SPORT.

To the Editor. Sir,—The cry is suing up to Heaven from the Bluff" to To Kcinga, "Save us from the tyranny of the bigot," and tho .published /reports in to-day's payors of tiho mass meeting at Auckland shows that at last tho people have "wopo up." Public opinion has been lying dormant for too long, and during the past few years the reins of Government have been seized by men .and wo-men. who are making New Zealand tho laughing stock of tho world; Tho attack upon "tho Trade," a.nd tho disgraceful efforts now being in ado to extinguish horseracing are part and .parcel of tho samo policy—tho impossible- of moulding all men and women's minds in, tho same narrow, parochial, and insular mould, in which they, themselves, were incubated. The tone of your leading articles on the Racing "Commissioners' report is admirable; it is hitting clean from the shoulder, a.nd that is what is required. Now that tho sporting element has begun active. operations, there is every reason to believe that the tide will soon turn. New Zealand is essentially a sporting country, and. given good organising, we ought to he able to administer such a cudgelling to the "Xo-sports" party as will make them think once, twice, and lib rice before they again attempt to interfere with the liberty of the subject. As a Catholic, T may say that the sporting element will have our active support, and T doubt not thiat many a priest will be seen on the platforms of New Zealand—as I liavc seen them in llonrko—battling for the people's liberty. Tf much' more bullyragging gors on in this country we shall take our .jackets off and begin a fight that our anemic, friends n ill regret they ever provoked.—Yours trulv, 'SPORTSMAN.
