Advanck tables giving population records ascertained 'by this year's census of Xew Zealand have readied
us from the Government Statistician, Mr M. Fraser. These show that t<h© population of New Zealand in April last stood at 1,008,-107, without reckoning in the Maoris of those islands, Cook Islands, and other dependencies. Males have a decided preponderance in the totals, there being 531.858 males against 470,519 females. The million inhabitants include 25 f i7 Ch-ineso and 2877 half-caste Maoris. In glancing through tlio county statistics we notice that County of Horowihenua has a. population of (50(5-1. which number, of course, (toes not include the borough situate within, its confin. :>. Levin's population is set down at USOB. but it is fair to add another 400 or 500 to this total as being resident within a. radius of live niilos from the town. The sexes arc balanced very evenly in Levin, there being 808 "males to 800 females. Foxtou's population ; s 1037, and Palmerston North's 10,991. The population of the Avhole of the. 'boroughs of Xew Zealand is 505,598, and th?re are living in tlio counties. fn the islands adjacent to New Zealand 1079 people live, ami there were -18-11 people on shipboard when the census was taken. Auckland province contains the largest population : 2(51,5-0. Tlio province next in order (Wellington), is a long way behind, figuratively, t'ie record being 199,091. Canfnbury has 173,185, and Otago-Soiithland 191-130. A novel entry in the census is the population of the Xorih Island Main Trunk Line passenger train: i.e. 109 males and 43 feiuals. In conclusion, the .booklet gives details of the population of Xi-w Zealand in the succeeding quinquennial periods since 1881.
