LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the Presbyterian Church on Sunday night Rev. A. C. lenderson's subject will he " Christian Personality." The services at the Century Hall vvill be conducted to-morrow by the Rev. T. F. Jones. The ©veiling subject will be " The Grandest CoroJiation." Mr John Devine is the soloist. The collections to-morrow are in aid of mission work in the South Pacific. On Tuesday some surfacemen, /11 w<> 'k ' n the Parnell tunnel (Auckland), saw a man deliberately jump from the platform of one of the carriages of the train due to arrive in Auckland at 2.15. The man fell clear of the train. On being carried to the mouth of tike tunnel by .the surfacemen it was found) 'he was bleeding from a slight woundi in fh® forehead., and in a dm zed condition . The police were sent for, and on arrival questioned the nvan about his reasons for -acting as lie did. His replies showed that he was under the hallucination that the people in the carriage were talking about him, so he jumped off the tram to get away from them. He also stated that ho ihad been workrnff in Te Kuiti, and that the men Who worked with him were always accusing liim of jumping up in bed at n,ight and shouting, and l advised him to take a holiday. TVihlem searched the man ihad a bankbook, two cheques, and £10 6s 9d in cash' in his pocket. He is now being looked after by the police.
Notable successes with vegetable exhibits' were achieved at - 1 aimerston North A. and P. Show by i Mr W. R. Ingram, of Levin. In all he scored five prizes for vegetables, including two first awards ami: two seconds.
In September next a. bulb show is to be held at Levin by tllie local''Hot. tioultural Society. The actual date will be fixed ait the next meeting of the society's committee.
At the service to-morrow evening in the Century Hall, the choir will ■rendier the anthem "1 am Alpha and' Omega" (J. Stainer). -Mr .). Devine will sing the recitative and aria "I feel the Deity within" and "Ann, arm, ye Brave," from ".Twins Maccabaeu s'' (Handel).
.The Rev. D. C. Bates' forecast, as wired from Wellington last night, is as follows: —Present indications are for strong Southerly wind generally, with cold and changeable weather and squally in Kovoanx Strait. The barometer will probably rise everywhere.
In future the law business of Hankins, Fitzherhert and Blenkhorn, at Levin, will he carried on, under tllie sole charge and management of Mr Gharles Blenkhorn. The partnership has been dissolved a.s from 14th June, 1911, and all assets and. liabilities of the late firm are taken over by Mr .Blenkhorn.
The Children.? fancy dress carnival, •which is to be held at the rink next Wednesday, promises to be a great success, and patrons are advised by the rink manager to book their scats early and thereby avoid disappointment. The next big events at the rink are to 'be hockey 'matches, between Levin, Foxton and Otaki, and after these matches -aire played a. representative team will be selected to play Well in gton at the new Kilbernie rink, after which Wellington
A public presentation to Mr W. H. Field, M.P.—in the form of an illuminated address from members of his constituency, in recognition of •liis rn.an.y_ valuable services to the district—'is to bo made at an -early date. The function will take place in the Town Hall. Levin, on the third Friday in July, and it is likely that 011 the same occasion a presentation will bo made to Mrs Field. Jn all, a sum of over £-10 lui.s been, subscribed towards the event.
Notwithstanding the .showery evening, there was a good attendance of boys at the Y.M.C. A. rooms last night. R. Collier, G. Airciis and A. Gray each contributed A chorus went well with the Vicar as accompanist, t'lie latter also gave the talk, on "Thrift," and was keenly followed. a;iid_ it is hoped that the practical advice would be. followed by all present. A strike, in a mild form, states a. Grey exchange, took placo at the Miner's Hall on Tuesday evening oil the occasion of the "Willis-Smith combination visiting there to give their_ popular entertainment. Tho Catholic concert, an-'! dfiico at Manakau proved a groat success last evening, the Town Hall being well filled.
