HOROWHENUA NORTH (5), v WELLINGTON UNI TOD (1).
The above match took place at Levin yesterday, and was productive of fast and exciting play. At the start the home team pressed', and. W. Wilson scored a fine goal. Shortly afterwards Mackenzie added a second -point, Wellington thus being placed at a disadvantage from the first. . The visitors subsequently pressed severely, and had: hard lines in not scoring. A minute later they again experienced hard luck. C.'Wihon.just failing. Bacchus got away a difficult hit, and sticks against Mackenzie within a few .yards of goal looked ominous. Then' Horowlienua- broke away, through a. knock on by Mackenzie. Thorne passed splendidly t'o Henderson, and the visitors goal had an anxious period. A breakaway, relieved the pressure, -hut Bacchus .neutralised the effort and Mackenzie dribbled the ball along the line sending in a hot shot. The ball was quickly returned to the other end. and by an effort on the part of Whitehouse. was as quickly returned. At this stage play was of a fast and ex-iting nature, a smart shot just going over the home bars. Then some regular hard work on the part of White-house gave Cut field an opportunity, and that player hanged, the" ball towards the visitors backs, who eventually cleared. Their forwards then got possession, and play was kept in" the home 25. but the defence was sound, and Hugh Hall, with a powerful shot, sent the ball midfield. where it remained till half time, when the score stood Horowhonua 2 Wellington ° From the bully the home team had the better of matters, some givo and take play in midfield fin-al-ly resulting in the ball being sent to the visitors goal by Whitehouse. Then the wliole «of the Wellington forwards broke away and came -witlhlin an inch, of scoring, Hall saving the situation. A free hit subsequently fell to Wellington, but the danger was removed, and Vincent carried the ball well hrto.thc United territory. A ■ free hit fell to Wellington, but nothing tangible resulted. Play continued of a fast nature. Horowlienua having slightly the better of tih© exchanges. At last the United made a desperate attempt to score, Howe saving splendidly. The combination of both teams was excellent, and the defences were sound, Hall especially putting in a lot of hard, forcing work. Among the forwards Thorne was conspidiiO'iis, but the right wing did not receive sufficient attention. On one occasion Smart made a nice pass across field, and the ball was received by Vincent, who later .shotover the bar. Pressed at the other end Hall swiped into touch. A,n unproductive corner fell to Wellington, the ball, eventually being hit upheld by Vincent. Levin, however, returned to the attack, and Thome, with a swift hit, got a third boal. Immediately from the bully the United took up the attack, awl the whole of the forwards swooping down let in Collins, who completely defeated Howe. Some exciting work ensued in the Horowheniua. 20. but in Hall and Bacchus the visitors found a pair of splendid backs, Hall being frequently applauded. Towards the close of the game Horowlienua pressed 1 severely, and : from a persistent attack Henderson put on a fourth point for Horowlienua. A fifth iron I followed from a melee.
