DISTRICT NEWS.

a —- EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative."* Under the auspices of the Shannon Literary and Debating Society, -Mr Withov delivered a lecture on " Single ' Tax." The lecturer dwelt only, as an expert with his subject. Tlie theory of single tax was lucidly explained, but explanation of the practical application of such a. tax and its provable results was, to say tho least, indefinite. The lecturer received an attentive hearing, and at the finish questions wore asked by Messrs Law, Mitchell, Gunning and otliors. It was evident that the lecturer had made no converts to his cause. So far as relates to tihe general application of the princ.iplts of single tax by the genera 1 Government of the dominion, the only resolution, the advocates of the single tax ventured to put forward was moved by Mr Barclay (single taxer) and seconded by Mr Gunning (anti-single taxer). viz., "That all local tax revenues thro>uojhout tho dominion should be raised by rating on unimproved values of land." This motion, on being put to the meeting, was carried unanimously. The subject of single tax ihas seized on the minds of our local debaters; each day at stores, the post offico corner, railway station and all such places where people meet there are controversial arguments. It has been suggested that the matter be debated again, as the last debate was rather unsatisfactory, the judge giving his verdict for the single taxers and the audience for their opponents. Another debate on the subject would be a good' draw. A small charge could be made, a,nd the proceeds handed over to the library fund.
