EVENTS IN SHANNON
(Chronicled by our Resident Representative.^
Many people will regret to learn that Sister Moody Bell will •refliiiquish her position in the. Methodists Church on, tho Ist July next. Tho Sister during her stay hero has done good work, and tho church lias inaxle great progress under her charge. Gus. Abraham was brought beforeMr G. N. Wood., J.P., and fined £2 for having worked himself into a bellicose attitude in the. Club' Hotel.
With reference to the picture eoir ieirtainments every Friday night, I may record that there was quiito a disappointed feeling when the rumour went round that the proprietors wore going to withdraw from Shannon. Wo are all glad to learn that it was only a rumour, and that the proprietors have no snob intention. Tho pictures are spoken of by those who have patronised tho show as being superior to those shown in some of the largo towns. The Friday night pictures are becoming one of our institutions, and it would bo a loss to the town if they were withdrawn. It is to 'be hoped there will :I>6 a good attendance next Friday night.
An unfortunate misunderstanding: took place between the footballers of the Tokomara school 'swid tliaso of tbe Shannon school. A match had been arranged for last The Tokoniarn boys wore expected by tbe 8 a.m. train, and as they did not arrive by this train tho Shannon boys dispersed ; but later in the day the Tokomam team arrived in a. conveyance and found to their disappointment no team to meet them. This is bad management, and should bo a lesson to tho lads.
Your leader on Coronation celebrations in so nuicfti as you refer to Shnnnonites journeying .to Levin, etc., is considered "infra dig." Thievery idea, that Shannon couild. do nothing on its own account, and. , that we should journey to Levin to make merry and swell the crowd is too 'Utterly utter. Shannon will not subordinate itself to any towji on the Coast. We are not full of "wild eat" schemes to be able to walk foe fore we can crawl, but wo are proud' of our villnge and iis paramount position of solidity. (After this fanfaronade we hide our own little trumpet and wait to liear the dounds of vevelry by day that will b'ewafted down from Shannon on the astonished breezes of the 22nd.— Ed., Chronicle.)
