The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 1911. SHANNON-FOXTON WATER SUPPLY.
If Shannon's representatives onn arrange with the Foxton Borough Council a mutually .satisfactory scheme for a high-prpssn.ro wator supply, the citizens of both places will have cause lor feeling satisfied. That a town of Foxton's size .anit importance should have gone on as long as it has done with only primitive wator resources reflects discredit upon its previous administrative heads, and gives reason for extending hearty congratulations to Foxton'-s civic fathers of to-day on their more up-to-date outlook. The present negotiations with Shannon probably will lead to a workable scheme being evolved and carried out ; so it seems likely that Levin's surplus water supply stil'l must go unutilised. The executive heads of Levin until very lately had some hopes that the abandoned negotiations between Foxton and Levin municipal councils would 1h? resumed at .some later date, but evidently the seacoast town representatives have abandoned all idea of so doing. Perhaps it is as well for Levin that they have done so. The proposed yearly subsidy on account of water supply which Foxton was to have paid Levin would have been very beneficial to the inland town's finances, but to a town whose future prosperity and numerical increases are as assured as Levin's are the yea/rs may have '1)0011 not far distant in which the undertaking to supply Foxton with water would have proved both irksome and 'burdensome. In any event, Foxton is well-en titled* to make whatever arrangements best suit her; and. meanwhile, Shannon is to be -congratulated upon having the chaincc to participate in the scheme and to gain by it. All that Shannon's roprescntativeK need to do do is to be careful tliev do not pay too much for thoir waterwhistle.
