_ # A FINANCIAL NEWSPAPER AND THE COLONIES. BURDENS OF EMPIRE. [BY BLKCTBIO TELEGRAPH-COPYRIGHT. J LPKB PBBBB ABBOCIATION.J (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 28. The Economist says that the project of an Imperial Defence Fumd, controlled by Imperial representatives, is dissolving in light of facts and criticisms, as Sir Wilfred Laurier refuses to allow Canada to be drawn into the vortex of European militarism. The paper avers ifliat Admiral Henderson's report is causing trouble in Australia, while South Africa is glad to receive a dole of £1,000,000 per year for the support of a British garrison. The tendency of the large colonies is to regard the British nary with_ complacency and for the dominions to allow Groat Britain to pile up armaments as she pleases, while 'taking care that any small coloniail contributions are spent locally. EMPIrITcLUB. A DISTINGUISHED GATHERING. The Ladies' Empire Club entertained at a "banquet wives of the delegates to the Conference. Among those present were the Duchess of Connaught and Princess Patricia, Lady Emorsy Denman, Lady North - coto and Lady Carrington and Mrs Joseph Chamberlain. THE INDIAN CEREMONY. CALCUTTA. May 28. It is suggested that the ceremony known as Tnladhan should be performed at the Coronation Durbar, the King and Queen wearing a Hindu dress to lie weighed on a'speoiallv built scale, and its weight in gold to Tic distributed to the poor. As this involves a religious question, Moslems and Christians are opposing the proposal.
