The Sugar Beet Industry

After a lapse of many years the sugar beet industry of -the Maffra district has been galvanised into activity. Some 700 acres are under crop, the results of which promise well, and digging-and pulpingvopera-. tions are now in full swing. Heavy traction engines are -employed to transport the vehicles laden with roots to the Maffra factory, where a large excavation'has : just been' completed to hold pulp.. Mr G. S;. Dyer, the American expert, found the whole'plant in excellent'working 1 order, and a trial run showed everything to work very smoothly. So far the .prospects of success are good, but the future stability of the industry depends largely upon- the introdiuction into the State of a large numher of farmers familiar with the growing of sugar beet, and the providing for them of areas of land on which they may. set to work. —The Leader.
