A LINOTYPE SCANDAL.
Latkly .our linotype machine has been tweaking its parts, and the trouble has proved! wore© tlhan. it should have. Until this year it could have been overcome at a day's notice by replacing tlhe broken part, but some six months ago the linotype manufacturing company withdrew its agency from the New Zealand! firm, which, for years past, had represented it, and notified all newspapers that in future the agency would be administered .from Sydney. As a result of this change newspapers in New Zealand suffer great inconvenience. Ornr wants of last week and' this could hare been filled at a day's notice in the form
of a telegram;, to Wellington, but as matters now are we have, to wait for a Friday until we can get a letter forwarded to Sydney, and then wait for another week or (to until the order can bo delivered! \o us. Tin's position is a scandal for any reputable manufacturing company to be concerned in and responsible for. -and wo are making this public protest- against the scandal in th'P hope that some amendment will ho hastened thereby. Tsven when orders "are" sent t< l i Sydney, the full requirements :mt not met. We have twice sent orders to the Sydnev agents during the Inst two months, find have r--coived only part of <onr requirements on each occasion, and no e.v planations have been {riven as 'o why the orders were not completed Surely there is a moral obligationif n'o stronger one—upon the mannfacturins company to have thisstate of affairs remedied? Lately we have been reduced to dipping our nnnnr'n.stomed nose in the dusty I spare-boxes of disused long-primer cases, and thus losing time which could have been bettor employed. Besides, there is money lying m- . vested in our big linotype, and we- ! detest to see its mechanism in- ; operative while we and our assistj ants set typo by hand.
