THE SALEYYARDS CONTROVERSY

To the Editor. Sir,—-Your footnote to my letter of Saturday docs not cover the point. Von state ih.it the cattle arc fed and watered when allcwed tn remain in the yards over ni;j;ht. That statement is quite true, but what of the cattle tiiat were kept in the pens nu Friday ni;iht! J There is no water race in the pens, and the cattle that f referred to in my letter were kept in the prn_s. some of them were still penned up at eight o'clock on Saturday morning when T passed within view of the pens-: I took particular notice of the fact, and, further, the occupants of the houses in the vicinity of the yards were treated to a further round of bellowing from some cattle in the outer yards on Saturday night. These cattle were not removed until about seven o'clock on Sunday morning.—Yours, etc, A. GTIOVER. Levin, May 15, 1911. (The cattle to which Mr Grovpr refers .above (we learn on enquiry) were sold to a Wellington buyer, and for his convenience they were left in the outer yards for a while, as he had diflieulty in making arrangements for the securing of trucks or for droving. As to Mr Grov"er's complaint about other cattle being kept in the pens, Mr Abra.ham'-s reply, that they were fence-breaking hulls, should bo sufficient answer. Certainly it would -be inconvenient for any tent-clweller in the vicinity to be walked over by a ramping bull escaped from the outer yards. Apart from these incidental aspects, there is the broad one of business interests. The IV.-viii stock salt's are the host Inisiness-bringing gathering that lucal shopkeepers enjoy, and it would be a losing day for them if the ln-ation of tli:» m!os we:-? altrrcl.
