Dean and Dunn, of ICimberley road and district, requesting t!ic council to got an estimate for erecting a bridge over the Ohau river at the road crossing, they pledging themselves to assist >n raising a loan for the construction, • if the cost was not prohibitive. They thought the. Government should be approached to suibsidise the amount required even more liberally than £ for C. as almost all the whole of the binds benefitted are L.T.P. tenure. Cr. Stephenson said that ho did not see that very much could, he done in the matter, as the deputation was not present. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The County Engineer submitted the following report:— To Iloro Riding.—Tn this riding all the metalled roads are fairly good at present. The protective works in the Waikanae river are now finished and from the work done 1. expect good results. The metalling of the Ngarara road is in hand and will be finished during the month. J have called tenders for metalling a portion of the Reikio-rangi-Mangone road,, and they are due to-day. It is only about 25 chains with metal at both ends. Capital progress is being made with, the Otaki Gorge road extension. The

contractor has about ten or twelve men on, and the good weather lias enabled him to got well ahead. I propose to call tenders for metalling 18 or 20 drains of the Gorge road, between the Rearing Meg and the Forks; the road' can l>e metalled witli rotten rock from the side outtings, and it will widen them; before doing anything at this it will he necessary to widen the* road at the blue blufT, as it is very dangerous. I propose calling tenders for this work on Monday, and 1 the tenders could be dealt with' :by a com- - mittee, say, in a week, Otaki Riding.'—ln this riding all the roads are good at present.- I would have called'tenders for the expenditure of the £50 that yo>u put oai the estimates at last meeting for widening the main road near the over-bridg south of Manakau, but as - I have made application for a Government grant-for tliis work, and - j vvc have a-chance of getting-it' I * "jjj

think it will bo as well to make one job of it. The work of piping the leaking portions of tlie Waikawa water races is finished for the present, and I expect the water will bo turned on to-day. Wirokino Riding.—ln this riding ibe roads in many parts are getting short of metal. J. got the far-off or northern end of the Foxton road Tepaired from the Foxtoh pit (Mr jßobinson's). The metalling of Fairfield road is about finished as far as it is necessary to do it at th« present time. The Horowhenua East road, from the borough boundary to the Arapacpae road, is nowmetalled 20 feet wide, and from 4in to 6in thick, or about 20 yards to the chain. "When it is set and worn down: with the traffic it will bo a good road, as there is no boulders to come to the top as the wear goes on; I would very much like to see the whole of the main road from end to end of the county get similar treatment. . T have called tenders for filling metal into trucks at Ohau ond taking delivery of the same at Kopntaroa (they are due to-day). '•This metal is intended for the rond through Dr. Newman's swamp. Tt has waited manv years for it. but T •hope it will be done this time as f;jr as our rote will allow. T have also called tenders for the metalling of Hokio road : the P.W.D . are verv anxious that £50 be spent- the road wants it. Tokomarn Hiding. —Tn this riding all the roads are fairlv ffood. Contracts for the main+enanee have been entered into at both ends of the riding. The work of (retting readv for the winter is nroeedi"g at the north end by repairing all weak places with metal, the same will be dime v»t the .south end as soon as possible. The formation of TJewa I?own street. Tnkomaru. is fretting on very well, and if the Railway Department would onlv lower the culverts at tho north end the road would be opened for traffic in less than a month. Tenders ;are called and are due to-day for the metalline of the aforementioned road, and the streets in Mr Kellv's sub-division. The maintenance is being verv well attended to in most onrts of the riding. T visited the Shannon bridge in company with Mr Moran. the inspecting officer of the Public Works Depart - ment in connection with the anolication that T sent in for a sul>si<lv r.n to CoOO for the purpose of protecting the bridge on our (or eastern) side. Tam <rlad that councillor* thought of this matter, as if is t'nr more serious than most oeor»le think T have not been up to where the erosion is going on for about +wo vn,ir« lint when T saw it the other dnv T was thunderstruck at tlm rate fbo river is encroach in"', «nd there is to doubt in mv mind it is onlv n nt rstion of time, and'that time nnv )>" short, when the river will st nio-titMi its course nnd : leave the bridre h i.Tiand drv. T hnve made cert »"i mrposnls th<* Pnblif Work.-; T>« n.'n )•- men'/ that T think will b« snin.'-ienr for the present, but T boon j.iip council will impress on tlm fJown-tiK-nt the urgenev of send: , f il - Ijc«t man that thev kiv o-n 1 h. ■ .-•j»eot. ond reno'-f ns .->« tir.tol.V.
