A Theatrical Ruse
The following advertisement appeared in all the newspapers publish ed in a German town a few days bo fore a new play was produced: "Young lady, orphan, with! 50,000 til ale rs at her disposal, and proprietress of one of the most profitable retail businesses in Prussia, wishes to meet a young man capable of managing her business, with a vieu •to matrimony. No special business training necessary, or need to be possessed of means. — Address M.W.H., guardian. No agents." On the day that was to see the first performance of the new play each of those who replied to the advertisement—and there were very many—received a 'lithographed not: 4 in these terms: "Sir: It is a linist important matter to know whether my niece will please you. This evening she will be with me at the Lvceum Theatre, in Box No. —. M.'W.B." The latter was crowded with young men. and during the play hundreds of opera, glasses were turned on Box.
