EVENTS IN SHANNON

A scratch match was played, Duuckley (skip), Olson and Knowles against Liml. (skip), Rooso and TJarelny. Tlie latter team won hy 20 to 13 points. VALEDICTORY. As soon as it was known definitely that Mr and Mrs lOsson were about to leave u.s a cominitfco of settlers and business men met to consider what way was best to show the public ap])recialioii of the departing (•iti/.ens. ft was resolved to inaugurate, a surprise party. "All hands were requested to lie low," and only to tiring in such friends who could keep a secret. It was also resolved to present Mrs E.sson with a handsome gravelling rug, as a small token of the esteem in which she and Mr Essou were licld hy the people of Shannon. The committee carried out tho arrangements completely. At 8.30 last evening a. large throng of ladies and men made their way along Ballance street to the police station. Those not "in the know" wondered what tragedy had happened, or what was taking place—Mr Esson amongst the number. The police station was fairly besieged hy persons of all ages and sexes. When mutuah understandings had been come to the party was invited inside. Tire evening was spent in feasting, singing and speechmaking. Mr Venn, J. P., paid a high tribute to Mr Esson , s ability and conduct during his stay in Shannon. Mr Woods, J. P., endorsed all that Mr Venn had said. Mr Gunning, on behalf of citizens, presented Mrs Esson with the ihanclsome travelling rug. and in a few well-chosen remarks, said his personal experience of Mr Esson was that Mangaweka was about to receive a very capable officer. Mr T. 0. Dnncldey eulogised the services Mr Esson had rendered the community nml regretted his departure. Mr Dnnekley read a letter from Mr G. Sfephon.son, stating he was sorry he could nob be present. He wished Mr Esson well in his future. Messrs Rovis. Perry, Gunning, Woodmass, and Clayton contributed songs: Miss Gunning played a, selection on the piano; Mr Gall and and Miss Wjekliffe contributed readings and recitations, and the evening's entertainment wound up with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne " and cheers for Mr and Mrs Esson.
