EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative.) JOHNSON-JEFFRIES PICTURES. For the first time the Shannon! public had a chanco to view the low-looked for and much criticised pictures of the Johnson-Jeffries debacle at San Reno. On what grounds these pictures could possibly :be objected to is beyond comprehension. There is nothing brutal or, of a demorailising nature in the whole fight. From beginning up to the last round is apparently a tame arfair but those who know anything about the "game" see the science exhibited by the two giants. The last; ixnind is the only one in which there appears anything approaching severe punishment. Jeffreys is knocked down three times and is carried to his corner, but, after attention is given him, he is able to walk leisurely away—apparently not much the worse for-his castigation. From a spectacular point of view the I only thing to be found fault, with is the" want of a few real good knockdowns every second or third round. The views of the old prize-ring warriors as they step into the arena to be shown, and their past .jertorman cos made known to tho crowd by the "announcer" is a sight worthy of contemplation. Old John L. Sullivan, with his white locks protruding from beneath his skull cap, his square jaw and burly figure steps on the platform. One looks at this old hero of a hundred fights, the mind goes back about thirty years to tho day when he was proclaimed victor over Jake Kilrain in a seven-ty-five round battle. Bob Fitzsimmons, the ex-champion, and many other noted pugilists were exhibited. The show is worth seeing. All lovers of sport will do well to view it if opportunity offer. The pictures of Johnson showing his muscular j)ower and his great self-control d'niring the fight are object lessons in themselves. Miss Mason having resigned her position as teacher in the Shannon school, has left us. All good wishes go wit!* her. Mis Eager lias <been appointed to fill the vacancy caused! by Mies Mason's resignation. Mr Judd, who has charge of _ the census returns, is having a lively time. When he has finished lie promises to write a book that will make Steele Rudd weep with envar.
