The Governor (Lord Chelmsford) presided over a large gathering of . representatives of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congegationnl churches, when a resolution was carTied affirming the principle of Union. Lord Chelmsford deplored the alienation which at present existed of vast masses of the people, from the churches, and said that it was difficult to find a reason for this. He was not £oing to suggest one. •Other speakers were hopeful of the - -ultimate- union of the churches. That gathering, they said, showed that the spirit of unionism was growing.
