THE LIBRARY.
To tlio Editor. Sir,—Levin is rated by every commerci«al traveller of any note as the (< deadest" town in tlio dominion at the present time. Kor this the Borough Council must accept a lot of hlame—excessive valuations, excessive rates, excessive g.i.s charges. Jk excessive sanitation eliar.ces —in fact. ' excessive everything. They charge a poor hawker n license for plying his trade in the town, a carter for driving his dray, and a levy on local people in every possible way. Yet. •when they are accepting a tender for a. public institution, they go past local people because there is something under £20 difference in a .£'lsoo job. "White" men would at least have given the local tenderers the option of coming to the same price. It is up to the present council to go round with the bat (in "Wellington, of course) to raise money for a brass tablet, bearing thf inscription: "Built with Carnegie's Sweated Money and with Outside Labour." It is also up to von. sir. to publish the rating on the tendering, that we may (have a. guide fur the coming election.—Yours, etc., £18 RATEPAYER.
