In tho House of Commons Mr Arthur Ponsonby, Liberal M.P. for Sterling Burghs, in deprecating the comparisons between the British and German naval strength. urged the abandonment of a policy founded on the mischievious scare of 11)09. Lord Charles Beresford contended that our fleet margin was too small and suggested amidst cheers tfyo possibility of inducing the great English-speaking nations to unite for peace. If that were possible, JlO said we could reduce armaments. Meahwhile the expenditure must continue. Lord Beresford argued that, present estimates were inadequate to secure an unassailable position nf sea.
