Wiped Out
FATE OK NEW GUINEA EXPEDITION. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH-COPYRIGHT.] [PER PRESS *<?SOCIATION.J (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Minister of External Affairs has received the following telegram from Papua : " A report from Daru yesterday states that the "Merrie England" at Sanguan has been informed that the whole of tho Govparty has been wiped out, with the exception of two carriers, who returned to Boaribari."
This report requires confirmation, but the informant ,w:u; is a most reliable official, adds that he fears it is true.
Mr Atlee Hunt has received a letter from Judge Herbert expressing the opinion that the inarch in contemplation by Mr Smith (the Administrator) would preclude him from reaching the coast earlier than February 21. This letter was written after lie learned that Mr Smith intended to essay an overland journey to th'o upper reaches of Fly river.
