The Chronicle. PUBLISHED DAILY TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1911. SUMMER FORAGE FOR DAIARY COWS.
Tun week ltDloiv last, the week after, and as late as last Saturday, every .settler in the county was tuiamimtms i()i prais;> t,|- the practice of growing suitable forage for summer feeding of dairy cattle. Those who once had doubted the need were silenced by liho last two months of dry woat/ier which scorched the grass to tinder and made it almost valueless for dairy cows. For though it is
a fact that dry grass mid unlim t ed water will make gootl 'butchers-beef, they won't produce milk in payable quantities. Those truisms arc direjted by us to a much-less obvious lesson—the need l'or persistence in the growing of suitable .summer fodders year after year. "When the
winter rains come upon us, and the hiiidi feet of I'ole.v and her mates become deep buried in the slush of the lower paddocks; when, in fact, the whole subsoil is permeated with rainwater, it will seem less necessary
to many of our farmers to grow maize or lucerne or other suitable summer fodder than it does to-day; to-day when locally ivo have just received the first ampi o doAvnponr of
rain since last November. Yet the need is an annual one; and not until this absolute need is impressed upon e\ erv farmer in our wide community u'il] the settlers and citizens of Horo-

rial advantages which are inhere in this favoured stretch of km
'his summer season, dry though it has been, has yielded a higher genoral average of butter-fat than any previous 'one. And why? Bocause in this district a greater .number of
dairy farmers than ever before hare gone in for maize fodder this vear.
0 want to see the great bulk o (hem do it next year; for their owi
sakes and for those of their fello' citizens. This county, handicappeas it is by a lack of sufficient loca
capital, will best amrfnd that dra
