Parishioners, Meeting.
At a. meeting of parishioners, held last evening, at St. Mary's schoolroom, Levin, the Ven. ArcJid&acon Faucourt presided, supported by the Vicar and Major Burlinson. The Archdeacon opened with prayer. The Vicar (llev. S. G. Compfon) stated he had much ploasure in announcing that Major Burlinson had consented to stand as his churchwarden, in place of Mr A. V. Winchester resigned. The minutes were then read by the secretary, Major Burlinson, and confirmed. The chairman,, the Archdeacon of Wellington, opened the subject by referring to the proposed division of the present district into two. Ho emphasised the keenly-felt need of Shannon and Tokomani, and pointed out that their position was very different to that of this end, as they at that end had only a visiting clergyman, whereas here they bad a resident clergyman. Shannon, be said, felt it has got as far as it could without a resident clergyman, and that there was the clanger already experienced of their people going over to other congregations. The following resolution was proposed by Major Burlinson and seconded by Mr W. J. Reading:-" That this 'me-. , ting, seeing that another £G0 additional revenue is required to meet the increase in assessment, through the division of the present district, requests the collectors of the general church funds to canvass all subscribers for an additional annual subscription, and they would impress upon all parishioners the very large advantage, from a spjri- , tuail point of view , , tha't would accrue from the division of the district."
The resolution was put to the motion and carried unanimously.
Several mom'bers spoke of the.,urgent necessity that was incumbent upon all the parishioners to try and wipe off the mortgage of £100, which was included in tihe total liability of £266 debt on the schoolroom, and which (£IOO mortgage) fell due in December next. Major Burlinson spoke of the method of direct giving, and of the blessing of God which , wouldi accompany such a method. A subscription list was suggested by Mr W. J. Heading wdth the object of asking church people to give towards the extinction of the £100.
A hearty vote of thanks to the Archdeacon was moved by 4 Major Burlinson for coming to visit the parishioners, and to lay the matter of subdivision before them.
Tihe Archdeacon closed the meeting with the Benediction.
