This morning, near the Levin Post Office, a horse, which was tied by means of the reins to the wheel of a trap, suddenly backed and turned almost a complete somersault. It kickcd out wildly, and there was every appearance that tho trap would bo smashed to pieces. The animal however, was seized in time and quietened, and little damage was done.
Pork sausages and nuts were said to have formed the food for two days of a three-year-old child named Rose Fisher, at Hackney, London. She was seized with acute inflammation of the lungs, and died from headt failure following bronchial pneumonia.
The Tokaora correspondent of the Hawcra Star says that a large freeholder who was disposing of his lands in areas to suit purchasers at £60 per acre without improvements gave liis agent instructions to raise tho price to £70 per acre for back and £75 per acre for front sections for dairying purposes. "An experienced dairy farmer assures we." he continues, "that the land will ultimately around Tokaora and; Hawera reach £100 per acre, and lie is convinced it will pay handsomely."
The year 1910 ranks as one of the blackest and most disastrous that Lloyd's has ever experienced (savs a paper). The losses on big shipwrecks amounted to £3,000,000 for the year, whilst the insurances paid over minor disasters came to more than that. In all, more than £6,000,000 was paid out during the year. Tho biggest disasters recorded were those of the Pericles, which cost the underwriters £650,000, the Waratah. wliich was insured for £300,000, and the Kurdistan, over which a similar amount was paid.
