EVENTS IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative.} THE COMEDY, "THAT CRITICISM OF SAM." To Mr F. May, ■ Shannon : Dear Frank,—As Shannon representative of The Chronicle it is up to me to acknowledge the great advantage your last week's public appearance ilias been to the paper. It would be ungrateful indeed to pass you over without a word of praise lor the manner in which you played the leading part in the farcical comedy, "The Criticism of Sam." There is no getting over the fact that you alone saved the whole piece from ■Utter failure. Your side "gag'' ajid "patter," interpolated here and -there, was the life of the play. Your ludicrous frantic efforts to lay the eliief villain by the "heels" caused the whole audience to scream with laughter. But, dear Frank, speaking seriously, as a candid friend, I would advise you to give newspaper farcical comedy best — your nerves are not equal to it. We do not wish to lose you. so content yourself on the hoards. Your perfect imitation of the .Scotch dialect or twang endears yon to me. You could play the Hailie in Rob Rov: why not stage his play? In my mind's eye T can see you in the centre of the company at the windup leading with great gusto the chorus — Let us a' forget and a' forgie Rob Roy Macgregor 0! GENERAL ITEMS. Mr Bert Spencer ,who met with a bicycle accident last week, has suffered a relapse. Thinking he was sufficiently recovered he went to work, with the' result that he is now laid up again. A firo is raging in the Makerua Swamp on the Company's flax land. About 200 acres of fibre have been burned, and the fire is not vet out. This is a serious loss. It is to be hopedi the fire will be checked before further damage is done.
